Lunch: Puttanesca (Leftover)

October 7, 2022

Lunch: Penne Puttanesca (leftovers from last night's dinner ordered from a nearby Italian restaurant)

My dinner choice last night was Penne Puttanesca. I haven't eaten puttanesca sauce in quite a while. While it was absolutely delicious, I typically need to be in the proper frame of mind to eat it because it tends to be a little overly flavorful for me to often eat it.

This dish from this particular restaurant contained penne (and ziti) pasta with a puttanesca sauce: onions; garlic; whole, pitted Kalamata olives; anchovies; capers; fresh basil; and marinara (tomato) sauce.

Why is the sauce called puttanesca?

Puttanesca translates as “in the style of the whore.” The name derives from the Italian word "puttana" which means whore. Puttana in turn arises from the Latin word "putida" which means stinking.
