Beatles Rooftop Concert

January 30, 2024, at home

On this date in 1969, The Beatles performed their famous concert from the rooftop of their Apple Corps headquarters at 3 Savile Row in central London's office and fashion district. Joined by guest keyboardist Billy Preston, the band played a 42-minute set before the Metropolitan Police arrived and ordered them to reduce the volume. It was the final public performance of their career. The group would disband the following year.

R.I.P. Bob

January 30, 2024, at home

Today marks the 16th anniversary of the passing of a great man: my father-in-law. He was not only down to earth but also larger than life. Here I am with my wife's parents at our wedding reception on February 4, 2006. Bob, you are sorely missed and forever in our thoughts and in our hearts. We also miss my mother-in-law Lorna.

Today Is ...

January 29, 2024, at home

One of my favorite snacks is Doritos nacho corn chips dipped in chocolate pudding. When I was in sixth grade (1972-73; age 11 or 12), I first ate it in the cafeteria of Bayview Elementary School (West Islip, Long Island, New York) in an attempt to make two girls disgusted. They didn't care all that much, and I discovered that I really like it. I have eaten it many times over the years.

Chocolate Cake Day

January 27, 2024, at home

I really don't like to eat cake, but I do like to eat chocolate frosting, frozen and right out of the tub with a spoon. (I don't do that anymore, but I will enjoy a piece of cake as long as there is more frosting than cake.)

I moved to southeastern Florida in May 1998 from Jersey City, New Jersey, after working in New York City since 1991. During that time, I also lived in West Islip, Long Island, New York, and Elmwood Park, New Jersey.

Pain

A Facebook post from yesterday:

January 21, 2024, at home

Both of my thighs were numb after my two spinal surgeries in late 2023. Now, I am quite happy to be experiencing pain in my thighs. That means my nerves are healing. I never thought that I would ever (indirectly) wish for pain. I just wanted the feeling in my thighs to return. I'll take temporary pain over permanent numbness any day.

Today Is ...

In the 1940s, maybe early 1950s, when my dad was a kid, he had a pet squirrel named Jake. Jake lived outside, but would come into his house in Lindenhurst, Long Island, New York, to visit. One day, Jake never came back.

My dad (1934-1997) told me that Jake would sit on his shoulder and watch television with him. I am now questioning whether that is temporally possible, unless his parents had an early version of a TV. Yeah, he must have been in his later teens because he graduated from high school in 1951 at age 17, and then attended the Wharton business school at the University of Pennsylvania.

At Korvette's

January 20, 2024, at home

In the mid-1970s, when I was a teenager, my friend and I had sort of a double date at Korvette's with two girls we met over our home CB radios. One of the girls started dancing with one of the mannequins. My friend turned to me and said, "She's yours." LOL 😆

I like many cheeses, including Provolone, Gorgonzola, Brie, and Emmental (Swiss), but (I think) my favorite cheese is Leyden from The Netherlands, which is similar to Gouda cheese but contains whole cumin seeds and whole caraway seeds.

Today is National Disk Jockey Day. Dan Ingram was my favorite disc jockey on "WABC Musicradio 77" (770 AM) which broadcast from New York City when I was growing up on Long Island, New York, in the 1960s and 1970s.

The station began broadcasting Top 40 hits on December 7, 1960, less than three months before I was born, and switched to a news-and-talk format on May 10, 1982. Around that time, Ingram, and many of the other WABC DJs, went to WCBS (101.1 FM), which was an oldies music station in New York City, to which I also listened. Ingram retired in 2013 and passed in 2018 at the age of 83.

Ingram and the other DJs on WABC, including Harry Harrison, Bruce Morrow ("Cousin Brucie"), Ron Lundy (another favorite of mine), and Johnny Donovan, provided the soundtrack to my early life, especially during those many hot summers on the beach at Robert Moses State Park, either Field 4 or Field 5.

Here is a link to part of Ingram's broadcast on April 19, 1973, when I was 12 years old. (The songs in this clip have been removed.)

https://youtu.be/OJKSm99cE58

Around that time, as many kids did, I would record my favorite songs off of the radio tuned to WABC in my room with my portable cassette tape recorder by holding the microphone close but not too close to the radio speaker.

Meet The Beatles!

January 20, 2024, at home

Sixty (60) years ago today (January 20, 1964), The Beatles released their first American-version studio album on Capitol Records: Meet The Beatles!.

According to Wikipedia: "Meet the Beatles! is a studio album by the English rock band The Beatles, released as their second album in the United States. It was the group's first American album to be issued by Capitol Records on 20 January 1964 in both mono and stereo formats. It topped the popular album chart on 15 February 1964 and remained at number one for eleven weeks before being replaced by The Beatles' Second Album. The cover featured Robert Freeman's iconic portrait of The Beatles used in the United Kingdom for With the Beatles, with a blue tint added to the original stark black-and-white photograph.

"Introducing... The Beatles is the first studio album released by the English rock band the Beatles in the United States. Originally scheduled for a July 1963 release, the LP came out on 10 January 1964, on Vee-Jay Records, ten days before Capitol's Meet the Beatles!."

Water, Not Milk

January 19, 2024, at home

I can't believe how reduced the significance of my Facebook arguments has become. Now I am arguing whether adding water or adding milk makes scrambled eggs and omelets fluffier. The true answer is water, but many still say milk. At least it's better than politically arguing with liberals, who just call me names and then tell me I'm stupid without any proof. ... and when they ask for proof, and I give them proof, they just discount the source. I no longer bother with that.

One of my favorite books is "The Tao of Pooh" by Benjamin Hoff. (Tao is pronounced "dow.") Taoism is a Chinese philosophy/religion that emphasizes living in harmony with the universe. It also teaches that one doesn't have to label oneself as anything. One can just be (just exist). Pooh is an example of Taoism. Hoff writes from the perspective of himself, an author writing a book, but as if Pooh were sitting on his desk. He and Pooh have a conversation about Taoism. Hoff also wrote the book "The Te of Piglet" which explains the concept that there is power in being small.

I have eaten many roasted Pekin ducks (no "g") with orange sauce when I was a kid in the 1960s and 1970s, but I don't ever remember eating it in this style. I actually have been recently thinking about Peking Duck, so I will no doubt order it soon as Chinese food delivery.
