from husband Bill, June 9, 2026
On June 9, 1978, the Rolling Stones album "Some Girls" was released. This album is near and dear to my heart because it is the official album of West Islip High School's Class of 1979 of which I am a member. Location: West Islip, Long Island, New York, near New York City.
Of course, I have this album on CD. Long ago, I had two copies on vinyl: one uncensored cover and one censored cover. Several celebrities and their estates—including Lucille Ball, Farrah Fawcett, Liza Minnelli (representing Judy Garland), Raquel Welch, and the Marilyn Monroe estate—threatened to sue the band for using their images without permission, so the images were removed. George Harrison agreed to remain on the cover. He thought it was funny.
Our unofficial senior prom song is "Shattered" from this album. Our official prom song is "We May Never Pass This Way (Again)" by Seals & Crofts. Both songs were played at our prom by the live band.
Also, someone (in 1979 around graduation day) spray-painted (in black paint) on the side of the high school: "Class of 1979 Shattered." By the time I retrieved my camera, it was already gone.
"Shattered," a song about New York City, is the last song on the album.
"Shattered, shattered
Love and hope and sex and dreams are still surviving on the streets
And look at me, I'm in tatters
I'm shattered
Shattered"

My all-time favorite Stones song is from the "Some Girls" album: "Before They Make Me Run."
"Worked the bars and sideshows along the twilight zone
Only a crowd can make you feel so alone
And it really hit home
Booze and pills and powders, you can choose your medicine
Well here's another goodbye to another good friend"
"Watched my taillights fading, there ain't a dry eye in the house
They're laughing and singing
Started dancing and drinking as I left town
Gonna find my way to heaven, 'cause I did my time in hell, oh yeah
I wasn't looking too good but I was feeling real well
… Oh after all is said and done
I gotta move I had my fun
Let us walk before they make us run"
