from husband Bill, at home
This afternoon (March 15, 2026), my wife and I visited my mother at her nearby home, as an early celebration of St. Joseph's Day, which is on March 19. My wife purchased traditional zeppole, one of which I enjoyed this afternoon at Mom's home. (Zeppole also refers to fried dough sprinkled with powdered sugar.)Other Italian/Sicilian treats that my wife purchased at Italian stores earlier this afternoon: arancini (Sicilian rice balls); breaded/fried eggplant (no sauce); pasta shells filled with ricotta cheese (no sauce); cannoli; and Italian butter cookies.
Why did the zeppole have green cherries when red is the color of Italy? Well, the colors of the flag of Italy are green, white, and red. (My heritage is mostly Italian, as well as Portuguese, Austrian, and Swiss.)
