R.I.P. Max & Hugo

December 13, 2024, at home

I am deeply saddened by the passings of Max Huls (1953-2024) and Hugo Vianello (1926-2018). R.I.P.

When I was studying for my master's degree in journalism at the University of Missouri in Columbia in the mid- to late 1980s, I covered the MOSPAC Symphony Orchestra (MOSPAC, for short), which is a makeshift, educational symphony which included teenagers from around the world who would gather for just a few weeks in preparation for future careers with symphony orchestras. I wrote a few articles about MOSPAC for one of the two city newspapers.

I wrote an article after interviewing Max Huls, the concertmaster (lead violinist) of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra (at the time) who had traveled to Missouri to help instruct the teens. (He was later a member of the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra.)

Today is National Violin Day, so while doing a little research, I just found out (on Google) that he passed away. So sad.

I wrote another article after I interviewed the conductor, Hugo Vianello, who was also at MOSPAC at the same time as Huls. Vianello founded the Missouri Symphony Orchestra and the Missouri Symphony Society. I also just found out on Google that he passed away.

I haven't thought about these guys in decades. This news (to me) stirs fond memories. (I have since forgotten what MOSPAC stands for, and I am unable to find a reference online.)
